Biography

The art of painter Ton van der Werf (Soestdijk, Netherlands – 1956) is also a bit the art of wandering. At relatively young age, after his studies at the academy for the arts in Utrecht, Ton left for Central America.
During his travels he had a lot of adventures, but also got to know the seamy side of society. In Mexico City he could assimilate these traveling experiences at the ‘Centro de Investigacion y Expermitation Plastica’. Here he attended a course in fresco painting.

Mexico, Friesland, Baarn, Antwerp, Berlin, Amsterdam, Morocco, Cuba, Maastricht: Being gifted with the ability to adapt to any circumstances, Ton always could feast his eyes. This translated itself into his paintings. The acurate, exciting and refined use of colour displays various moods and emotions.

Van der Werf however does not limit himself to the emotional expression of the moment. He also portrays interesting and imaginative interpretations of reality.
Spontaneous interactions between poetry and irony, sensitivity and agression, create paintings that reflect an equally cheerful as enlightening look at the reality that surrounds us.

Ton’s use of colours has significantly changed during his stay in Maastricht. Earlier on his colours used to be quite dark. Now they are bright, influenced by the Burgundian way of life.
